Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad
Heisler No. 91

The Heisler leads an excursion on a wet June day in Washington State, travelling from Morton to Elbe, on Tacoma Rail trackage through forested mountains that require no explanation as to why there are logging railroads.

The trip includes crossing the Coal Creek trestle, then backing and repeating the move for a photo runby. Listen as the 91's drivers slip on the wet rails to get started again!

The 91 takes a brief break at Elbe to be serviced and watered, then couples back to its train and heads up the hill for Tacoma. Our parting shot is near Eatonville where the 91 pauses to catch its breath before travelling on.

Chehalis & Centralia Railroad
Mikado No. 15

Join us as we ride the train from Chehalis to Millburn through a pastoral landscape in Washington State. This is Chehalis & Centralia's regular scheduled summer service and is readily accessible from Interstate 5.

Ride along and experience the sights and sounds of the railroading of former days: rails that still go clickety-clack and whistles that are blown at grade crossings with the bell clanging. Hang on as the engineer opens the throttle and shows us what the 15 can do and the noise it can make!

We watch as the crew runs the engine around the train at Millburn for the return trip to Centralia. Although the locomotive is at the head of the train, it is now travelling in reverse.

Southern Pacific
Daylight GS-4 No. 4449

Lovingly restored in SP's brilliant Daylight colors, the 4449 pulls an excursion from Portland to Bend, Oregon, on BNSF rails. A silver Amtrak diesel is tucked in behind the tenders but it blends in well with the coaches.

The trip follows the SP&S route through the Columbia Gorge and then heads south at Fallbridge on the Oregon Trunk. Two crossings of the Columbia River are featured as well as the spectacular Crooked River Bridge north of Bend. The change in scenery and weather is remarkable as we go from the wet, lush forests of western Washington to the sparse, dry open land east of the Cascades.
